Nearly 50 young musicians from Big Noise joined our Big Takeover, where they planned and lead musical activities at our after-school club.
As well as getting a taste of how Big Noise is run from day to day, young people gained invaluable workplace skills and experience, including writing CVs and applications, job interview practice and work experience.
Young people were given various job titles, including head of centre, director of music, and operations manager. There were also roles for set-up crews, and jobs in finance, social media and communications, as well as administration roles.
This is the first Big Takeover that the young people of Big Noise Govanhill have taken part in, following two similar events at Big Noise Raploch in previous years.
Cristabel, 13, took on the role of director of music. She said:
“It’s an important job where you get to make decisions that affect the whole team.
“I was popping into sessions, seeing how everyone was doing in their different roles, and helping plan things like concerts. It was really fun.
“Takeover day also teaches you about real-life processes, like applying for a job and doing an interview. I found that bit fun but a bit nerve-wracking too.
“Overall, I just really enjoyed everything we did.”
Alison Gornall, head of centre at Big Noise Govanhill, said:
“It was a historic day to have our young people take over and run the after-school programme for the first time.
“Their abilities truly shone through all the different roles and positions, and the Big Noise staff team and I were incredibly proud of them.
“The after-school participants also loved experiencing classes led by some of their older peers rather than their usual teachers, which was a particular highlight.
“Preparing CVs, applying and interviewing for roles, and working as a team to run the after-school programme will provide our young people with essential skills and experience to take forward to the world of work or further study in the future.”
