Lorna Carruthers (violin) is originally from Ayrshire in the southwest of Scotland. She spent eight years as a pupil of St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh before going on to gain a degree in music from Oxford University, then enjoyed several years of postgraduate studies with David Takeno and Arisa Fujita at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Lorna has always loved working with children and has a varied experience in music education, including in peripatetic violin teaching, music workshops and community projects, and directing young ensembles, as well as being a qualified teacher of Secondary School Music.
Though very busy now with her role at Big Noise, she has previously enjoyed many years of professional playing, including many guest appearances with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as well as other freelance orchestral and chamber music work.
Lorna began her career with Sistema Scotland as a musician with the new team in Glasgow which launched Big Noise Govanhill in 2013. Five fantastic years later she moved even further north with her husband, to join the wonderful Big Noise team in Torry, moving into the Team Leader role in early 2021.
She also enjoys exploring the beautiful Angus countryside with her two dogs, as well as indulging her passion for horses and all things equestrian!
