CASH AWARD HITS RIGHT NOTE WITH ABERDEEN MUSIC PROJECT

30 December 2016

A music initiative in Aberdeen is celebrating being awarded a share of a £275,000 windfall.

Sistema Scotland, which runs the Big Noise project in Torry, has received the cash from the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The centre celebrated its first birthday earlier this year with some of the cash already being used to help put on a Big Noise Christmas concert.

Nicola Killean, CEO, Sistema Scotland, said: “The support we receive from players of People’s Postcode Lottery is vital for maintaining and expanding the Big Noise programmes.

“The money raised helps children and young people in some of Scotland’s most deprived communities gain an invaluable range of life skills and supports them to lead fulfilled and successful lives.

“The children and young people of Big Noise learn to play instruments and have a lot of fun, but ultimately, the programme creates long-term social change in some of Scotland’s most deprived communities.”

The six-year project sees pupils in primary one and two receive musical tuition and primary three pupils taught to play violin, viola, cello or double bass by trained musicians.

Run by Sistema Scotland with funding from Aberdeen City Council, Big Noise Torry is its third orchestra with centres in Raploch, Stirling, and Govanhill, Glasgow.

The orchestra aims to transform children’s lives and the wider Torry community through music.

Last year 65 pupils in primary three were part of the after school club and orchestra, but now 135 pupils are taking part.

People’s Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery in which participants play with their postcode to win cash prizes, while raising money for good causes across Britain and internationally.

To date, players have awarded more than £161 million to good causes, £825,000 of which has gone to Sistema Scotland over the past three years.

Clara Govier, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “People’s Postcode Lottery is committed to supporting charities and good causes across Great Britain and beyond.

“I am delighted that our players are able to support the work Sistema Scotland does to help change the lives of children and their families.”
